VMware vSphere Data Protection

This is a video tutorial walking you through how to install, backup and restore virtual machines via vSphere 5.1 with vSphere Data Protection.

vSphere Data Protection

vSphere Data Protection – Installation

1. You must download the vSphere Data Protection virtual appliance for vmware. The vSphere Data Protection virtual appliance comes in 3 flavours – 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. In this tutorial I will be using the 500GB version. We will walk through deploying the appliance with vCenter 5.1, setting the network information and registering with vCenter Server.

vSphere Data Protection – Backup

2. In my lab environment I have 1 Microsoft Windows 2008 virtual machine acting as a web server. During the backup section we will use vSphere Data Protection to create a daily backup job, trigger a backup of the Windows 2008 virtual machine, fast track the process so you can see this process complete successfully.

vSphere Data Protection – Restore

3. Now that we have a successful backup of our virtual machine we will now simulate a restore. I will go ahead and delete the virtual machine. Once the virtual machine has been deleted from disk, I will then run a restore job within vSphere Data Protection, restoring my virtual machine back into vCenter.
